Will a skylight make my house hotter in a Raleigh summer?
Not if it is chosen and placed well. Modern Low-E glass reflects heat while letting light through, and we position the unit for daylight rather than direct afternoon sun. Vented models let trapped hot air escape, which many homeowners find cools the room.
Can a skylight handle our storms?
Yes. We recommend impact-resistant laminated glass for Triangle homes to stand up to wind and falling branches, and the flashing kit is integrated into the shingles so heavy rain sheds down the roof instead of into the attic.
How do you keep it from leaking?
Flashing. A skylight is only as dry as the metal around it. We use the manufacturer's flashing kit, layer it into the shingle courses like a deck of cards so water always runs over, never under, and seal every corner before we call the job finished. Our lifetime workmanship warranty covers it.
What does a skylight cost?
Ranges published on our blog for North Carolina homes: roughly $1,100–$3,300 for a standard fixed or vented installation, more for large or electric units with rain sensors, and less for sun tunnels. Repairs are quoted after inspection. You always get a written, itemized estimate with the price locked.
Can you repair my existing skylight instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the leak is in the flashing or seals and the glass is sound, we repair it. If the seal between panes has failed (fogging) or the frame is damaged, replacement is usually the better value, we will show you which and why.
Where is the best place to put a skylight?
We look at how the sun crosses your roof and where you want the light to land. North-facing gives even light all day; south and west give more warmth. We also check the framing and any vents or valleys nearby so the unit sits where it can be flashed cleanly.
